Super weird behaviour with xorg.conf in ubuntu 18.04
I'm currently using ubuntu 18.04. I want to switch between two configuration by changing my xorg.conf file and then logging off and back in to apply the changes.
My mind is constantly being blown by what's happening, and I could really use some help.
I have a MSI GE63VR 7RF Raider with a GTX 1070 with nvidia driver 415 installed. I want to use the screen of my laptop and a second screen which is connected to the hdmi port (located on the 1070).
My starting point is the following :
- No
xorg.conf
file. When i doxrandr
, my hdmi port is not detected. When going inside nvidia X server settings, in X server Display Configuration, i can selectX screen 0
orPrime Display: eDP-1-1
Then :
I do
nvidia-xconfig
which generates an xorg.conf file.I log out then log back in.
My second monitor is now on with my desktop. However, my initial monitor is stuck on a purple ish screen (same color as the login thing).
When i do
xrandr
, my hdmi port is now detected, but not my eDP-1-1. When going inside nvidia X server settings, in X server Display Configuration, i can selectX screen 0
orAsus VG23A
(My 2nd monitor) but notPrime Display: eDP-1-1
Then :
I delete my
xorg.conf
I log out then log back in.
Everything is working perfectly (Both screens are on)
When i do
xrandr
, my hdmi port is now detected, as well as my eDP-1-1. When going inside nvidia X server settings, in X server Display Configuration, i can selectX screen 0
orAsus VG23A
(My 2nd monitor) orPrime Display: eDP-1-1
But, if I go in my nvidia X server settings, modify the Layout of my screens, and Save to X configuration file
, log out, log back in, I'm back to having only my second monitor and not the monitor of my laptop.
My issue is I have to switch between a configuration in which my second monitor is not used to this configuration, and at the moment I need to log out/ log back in twice and to do some weird stuff on my xorg.conf
file. I would appreciate any help to understand what's going on there.
