Unable to forward requests from apache2 to Tomcat 7: Ubuntu 16 LTS

0

I followed this tutorial to forward some of the requests from apache2 to tomcat 7. The first difference, I have from this tutorial is that I already have port 8009 occupied by some other process and I can't claim from it. So, I replaced every occurrence of 8009 with 8019. The second difference is that I am using zip distribution of tomcat 7 as opposed to installing it using apt-get. The relevant portion of server.xml file is

<Connector port="8019" protocol="AJP/1.3" redirectPort="8443" />

worker.properties have following entries

workers.tomcat_home=/home/adeel/apache-tomcat-7.0.82
workers.java_home=/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre
worker.list=ajp13_worker
worker.ajp13_worker.port=8019
worker.ajp13_worker.host=localhost
worker.ajp13_worker.type=ajp13
worker.ajp13_worker.lbfactor=1

/etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf file has following entries

<VirtualHost *:80>
# The ServerName directive sets the request scheme, hostname and port that
# the server uses to identify itself. This is used when creating
# redirection URLs. In the context of virtual hosts, the ServerName
# specifies what hostname must appear in the request's Host: header to
# match this virtual host. For the default virtual host (this file) this
# value is not decisive as it is used as a last resort host regardless.
# However, you must set it for any further virtual host explicitly.
#ServerName www.example.com
JkMountCopy On
JkMount /assemble_empty_node* ajp13_worker
JkMount /bpcom* ajp13_worker
JkMount /bpcom2* ajp13_worker
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
DocumentRoot /var/www/html

I restarted both apache2 and tomcat but requests do not get forwarded from apach2 to tomcat. I have done some googling and tried different solutions but none did work.
