Dual-Booting OS X or macOS with Linux without rEFInd - only boots with Option key and boot menu

Same question asked here and followed David Anderson's solution, but running into issue on reboot:
Dual-Booting OS X or macOS with Linux without rEFInd



If I reboot without holding Option key and then selecting Debian, I get stuck at Loading Initial Ramdisk. It only boots properly if I hold Option key. Soft or Hard reboot doesn't matter.



I've tried some Grub options but I can't find any that resolve the issue.
