Changing the folder ownership on external HDD
I try to give permission of a folder to MySQL to move a database to another disk, but strangely, I receive a permission error.
tom@mypc:~$ mkdir /media/tom/Web/test
tom@mypc:~$ sudo chown -R mysql:mysql /media/tom/Web/test
[sudo] password for tom:
tom@mypc:~$ sudo ls -al /media/tom/Web/test
total 8
drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql mysql 4096 Feb 4 04:13 .
drwxr-xr-x 9 tom tom 4096 Feb 4 04:13 ..
tom@mypc:~$ sudo -u mysql ls /media/tom/Web/test
ls: cannot access '/media/tom/Web/test': Permission denied
Note that this error does not appear if I create the folder on my main HDD. I read several Q&A threads stating that the problem is the NTFS
format of the HDD, but my external HDD is ext4
.
The problem exists for all secondary HDDs (both internally connected with SATA cable and externally with USB). I reckon the problem is associated with mount
.
This is a typical entry of fstab
UUID=00e8ae0c-c00c-43dc-bc84-fa0abda33da5 /media/tom/Web ext4 defaults 0 0
permissions mount hard-drive filesystem external-hdd
