mysql8 won't start
In terminal I do:
sudo service mysql start
and I get:
Job for mysql.service failed because the control process exited with error code.
See "systemctl status mysql.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details.
systemctl status mysql.service gives me:

Im quite new to Ubuntu and MySql, but I believe this issue is that for some reason MySql can no longer access './binlog.index', am I on the right track and how do I fix this?
I did try sudo find / -name binlog.index
which gave me one result:
/var/lib/mysql/binlog.index
But how do I for it? what permission is required?

I ran sudo chown -R mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql
to give the mysql user permission on this folder, but do let me know if I have done the wrong thing.
It doesn't help :(

For me the issue was caused by the custom values that I had added to my.cnf:
#query_cache_size = 0
#query_cache_type = 0
#query_cache_limit = 2M
#sort_buffer_size = 512K
#read_rnd_buffer_size = 512K
#tmp_table_size = 32M
#max_heap_table_size = 32M
#thread_pool_size = 24M
#innodb_log_file_size = 16M
As soon as those were commended out I didn't have any more issues.
