my Ubuntu NAS stores some TB of data encrypted since years with eCryptFS.
Both content and file names are encrypted, so my files look like
ECRYPTFS_FNEK_ENCRYPTEDxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
however just now I notice that strange files are spread across folder that look like
EN88TE~2
All of them have 8 chars in the name and the 7th is always tilde "~"

I have also come folders containing two of them with the very same name.

Can you explain to me what is happening?

  • Have you been using other operating systems to write files there? Looks like old windows naming "hacks"

  • Let me explain: the entire 10 TB HDD contains general data and private data. The private folders are encrypted, the general are not. The entire HDD is exported over the network with SAMBA, to be shared with devices on my LAN (media players, TV, nVidia Shield, etc.) and also 2 Windows 10 PCs that mount the network share. So... YES... I use Windows to read and write files, however I do not map from remote the encrypted folders, but the decrypted ones. Moreover, encrypted and decrypted folders are not the same: /media/diskA/Crypted_MISC /media/diskA/Decrypted_MISC
