I have the following build:

  • GPU: MSI Duke 8G NVIDIA 1070 TI

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Aorus Pro Z390 (BIOS v9)

  • CPU: Intel Core i7

  • Thunderbolt: Gigabyte Titan Ridge

  • Monitor: LG Ultrafine 5K Display

  • OS: Ubuntu 18.10

The main issue I am having is being able to install NVIDIA drivers for my GPU while using my LG UltraFine 5K display. The following side affects / relations I have noticed are:

  • When connected to an HDMI monitor without the LG display, everything works fine and I can install the drivers.

  • When using the LG display, if I try to install any driver through any method, it leads to a purple-then-black screen on boot, and so I then have to disconnect and connect to my HDMI monitor

  • To get Ubuntu to work on my LG display, I have to install the OS without the Install additional 3rd party components option

  • The fans do not spin at all when connected to my LG monitor

As a result of not having the drivers, my computer severely lags when dealing with GPU-intensive applications. As well, if I use a GPU benchmarking utility, then the screen crashes and I am forced to reinstall the OS.

I am running the latest version of Ubuntu and the latest BIOS. Secure Boot is disabled. I am using 2 DP to DP cables between my Thunderbolt card and my GPU.
