Use apt-get from specific directory?

0

I want to use custom source list for apt-get
but not affecting the originals in /var/lib/apt/ and /etc/apt/

Suppose my account is xyz@xyz-PC:~$

I want to use apt-get work in /home/xyz/Desktop/apt-get/ directory.
That means if I use sudo apt-get update it will update the /home/xyz/Desktop/apt-get but the originals in /etc/ and /var/ will be unchaned.

What files and folders should be present in /home/xyz/Desktop/apt-get/ and what code be run in terminal?

  • apt & dpkg tools are coded to work in specific directories; so beyond 'shadowing' those locations temporarily with a local directory (which I'm not sure is a great idea) I don't see what benefits could be arranged (other than loads of complications & complexity that will later bite you).

  • You likely could use the Dir::Etc and Dir::Cache configuration items, as described in man apt.conf - however like the other commenters, I'd want to understand exactly what you're trying to accomplish before recommending that as a solution
