Dual screen resolution error

I run a dual screen setup and when I boot up ubuntu 18.04.2 I always have problems with both screens. The main VGA display zooms way in and I cant see the sidebar or top and bottom of screen. The HDMI display is black. However if I unplug the HDMI and boot the VGA is fine, and If I then plug the HDMI back in that display works fine. I have fixed this issue with command codes in the terminal for 16.04. So is there a fix for 18.04.2?
