Higan v106 / Ubuntu 18.04 - Gamepad detected but not working

I'm using a Logitech Precision gamepad with Higan since years and just upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04. The gamedpad is clearly detected by higan as I can correctly set inputs (for the right emulated console). But it won't work in game. Launching higan from terminal doesn't output any error
I've found a very few number of similar questions: one caused by the use of a usb controller hub (which I'm not using), and the other has no answer. But someone pointed the fact that the higan repository is very active and suggested to build higan from the last build (I'd rather avoid that - don't even know if it would fix anything).
Someone experienced this? Have a solution or at least a track?
