Ubuntu 18.04 live USB doesn't work
I created a bootable USB flash drive using Startup Disk Creator with Ubuntu 18.04 on it. When I insert the flash drive, instead of opening BIOS as I press F7 it gets me into a menu with a few choices like Try Ubuntu without installing, etc. When I start the installation process. It comes to the moment when you need to choose to delete all and install or to make a partition and so on. Then a small window pops out that says:
Warning! error fsyncing/closing /dev/sda: Input/output error
and there are 2 buttons, Retry or Ignore. It doesn't matter which button I press. It keeps popping out for a while, and then I need to press Continue again and again and I even made the bootable flash again and I still have the same problem.
I made another USB. I thought there might be something wrong with the USB, but I still have the same problem. I installed Boot-Repair, and it doesn't allow me to do anything except for sending a report. I installed GParted, and it shows me Unallocated input/output error during read on /dev/sda
.
I have been sitting over this laptop all day yesterday and it's starting to do my head in. I have installed Ubuntu on my wife's laptop like I did on mine exactly one year ago, and her laptop is working with no issues, and I have reinstalled mine like 3 or 4 times by now. Should I chop it with an axe and get a new one or there is still hope? Please tell me what to do, and I have another question why is so hard to make a bootable USB with Windows 7 on Ubuntu? I have downloaded UNetbootin on a different laptop, and it doesn't work.

Maybe there is a problem with the hardware: You can check the S.M.A.R.T. information of your drive/dev/sda
, and you can check the RAM with memtest.

@sudodus It does sound like a failing hard drive. The OP mentioned that GParted is having trouble to read/format/partition the mentioned hard drive, so the hard drive may need replacement.
