Can I change the APM and spindown of a HGST 10TB HDD for NAS?

I use a HGST 10TB HDD in a single external enclosure (Fantec) via USB on my Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately, the HDD makes a relatively loud clicking noise every 5 seconds and gets warm. I am pretty sure the disk itself is okay and the clicking is probably just the re-allocation of the head to avoid high temperatures on certain parts of the disk. The sound is unrelated of the disk beeing mounted or unmounted.

I was trying hdparm to check the APM settings for that disk and it is set to 254. I can change it but the disk will not spin down, even if I issue a spindown command via hdparm.

So I think maybe the engineers did not want this disk to spin down. Maybe it is related to the helium. Also, the fact sheet says it is using 7 watts in active mode and 5 watts in idle so the difference is not that big.

Would it be safe and possible to set a spindown otherwise or even use the power supply to completely power of the disk if not needed (at night)?
