Installing software on Kali [on hold]

I'm trying to install some software on Kali 2019.1 (VMware Workstation 12) following instructions here: http://linuxbsdos.com/2013/03/23/how-to-install-software-on-kali-linux/ but nothing is working. I've downloaded the ISO from the official Kali website.
e.g. attempting to install Ubuntu Software Centre with apt-get install software-center
results in E: Package 'software-center' has no installation candidate
The GPK-Application GUI which is supposedly available from Applications > System Tools > Add/Remove Software does not exist. In fact, the Add/Remove Software menu item does not exist.
When I open the Software application, which in Ubuntu functions like the AppStore, the only thing I get under categories is 'Add-ons'.
What is going wrong? It seems I cannot install anything which is frustrating!
apt package-management software-installation

This question appears to be off-topic. The users who voted to close gave this specific reason:
- "This is not about Ubuntu. Questions about other Linux distributions can be asked on Unix & Linux, those about Windows on Super User, those about Apple products on Ask Different and generic programming questions on Stack Overflow." – RoVo, Terrance, Jos, guiverc, Rinzwind
If this question can be reworded to fit the rules in the help center, please edit the question.

it's a reflex when it comes to beginners question related to Kali. From Kali docs: Kali is a Linux distribution specifically geared towards professional penetration testers and security specialists, and given its unique nature, it is NOT a recommended distribution if you’re unfamiliar with Linux.
