Why using xinit instead of lightdm gives a black (no backlight) screen

I tried to use xinit to start bspwm. It started, but there was no backlight (I know that it started because pressing the bspwm exit shortcut dropped me back to tty1). The same was the case with i3. Both of them however started properly when I used LightDM.
