Ubuntu 18.10 -> 19.04 upgrade process fails

Rendered a reasonably recent install of 18.10 to 19.04 utterly painful. The machine is an Intel x64 based is a very basic with very simple components.

  1. Failed to upgrade sendmail, despite the fact the machine wasnt even using it. Crashed the entire install process. Had to manually remove it, system then automatically installed postfix. Why couldnt the installer have done that??

  2. Buggered up time, set it to Jan 19 00 !!

  3. Plymouthd was crashing, had to disable it in /etc/default/grub.

  4. Gnome does not load. Last message in boot.log is [ OK ] Started GNOME Display Manager.

  5. Syslog isnt working

Really in 2019 we shouldnt have to put our propellors on to solve really basic system upgrades.

Edit: to all those voting down my post, its not the way to improve the OS by hiding problems.
